Sicily, Italy
A destination that I would never forget is one I’ve visited during one of my many trips to beautiful Italy. Sicily, is definite beauty. Taormina has remnants of the Greeks and Romans, a fine medieval quarter and castle ruins, and modern shops and restaurants.
Destination visited in Sicily: Taormina
Airport to get to Taormina: Fontanarossa in Catania, it is an hour drive only to get there
Taormina is also on the train line between Messina and Catania and can be reached by train directly from Rome . The station, Taormina-Giardini, is 2km below the center served by shuttle buses.
My trip to Sicily was fully targeting the beach. So most of our activities were either beach related on at the beach. The nearest beach to Taormina is at Mazzarò , accessible by funivia from Via Luigi Pirandello. It’s a popular beach well serviced with umbrellas and deck chairs for hire (from about €8 per day). To the south of the beach, and an easy walk past the Sant’Andrea hotel, is Isola Bella , a tiny island set in a stunning cove.
Food?
Near the duomo, Casa Grugno serves cuisine that’s a mix of modern and traditional in a medieval Gothic-Catalan residence (closed). Ristorante da Lorenzo, Via Roma 12, serves seafood on a terrace overlooking the sea (closed). Traditional Sicilian food is served at Ristorante la Griglia, Corso Umberto 54, on an outside terrace during nice weather. Also Maffei’s Restaurant is recommended, Granduca, and Pizzeria Tiramisu’. Finally Garden da Nino is a nice Sicilian restaurant that is also recommended.
